The Blitz are perhaps the team most deserving of their place in American Football history. Originally called The Boxers, the team was run on an amateur basis by a bunch of ex-forces personnel. As avid followers of military strategy, they were always keen to apply their knowledge of the field of battle onto the field of play. Each season they would test out a new play, with some hilarious failures such as the Reverse Pincer and the Drunken Torpedo. YouTube is littered with shaky footage of some of the more comedic attempts.
In 1962 they went from zero to hero after striking gold with their latest play – The Blitz. This involved several running backs rushing the opposition quarterback when he was in possession. Their foes didn’t know how to deal with this assault, and the Boxers steamrollered their way through the 1957 amateur season unbeaten. The following season they turned pro, changed their name to Balham Blitz and won the Southern Conference at the first time of asking.
