When gifted the 3 month lease of a pride of Abyssinian lions by the Ethiopian Ambassador in 1962, the mayor of London was presented with a problem: he had nowhere to keep them. London Zoo had a bilateral agreement in place with Kenya, meaning they could only house Kenyan bred Masai lions, and Nairobi Zoo could only house British bred grey squirrels. Intent on providing the lions with some ability to roam outdoors, he decided that he needed a reliable electricity source to power a 15ft high electric fence. Battersea Power Station may have been the poster boy of London power production back then, but it was the gargantuan subterranean generator under Electric Avenue in Brixton that was the midfield dynamo (pun intended). Within days, a fence had been erected in the marketplace and the lions were lapping up the vibrant sights, sounds and aromas of their new temporary home. The attraction was an instant success with the locals, who went on to name their premier sporting team after their furry friends. The Brixton Lions formed in 1964 and have 4 Megabowl wins to their name. Each one has been celebrated with the addition of a bronze lion at the foot of Nelson’s Column.
